Prof. Friedemann Mattern

Friedemann Mattern has been a full professor of computer science at ETH Zurich since 1999. He heads the computer science department's distributed systems research group and is the founding director of the Institute for Pervasive Computing.

He received a Masters Diploma from University of Bonn and a doctorate degree from University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. Before joining ETH Zurich, he was a faculty member of Saarland University in Saarbrucken and of TU Darmstadt, Germany. He also served as a visiting professor at a number of other universities in Austria and Germany.

Mattern is member of the editorial board of several scientific journals and book series, initiated and chaired a number of international conferences, published more than 150 research articles, edited several books, and is involved in various research projects, often in cooperation with industrial partners. He is a member of the German Academy of Sciences "Leopoldina", the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences, and of acatech, the German Academy of Technological Sciences.

Mattern also acts as a scientific and strategic advisor to several research councils and international companies. His main fields of expertise are distributed systems and ubiquitous computing, and he is particularly interested in the upcoming Internet of Things.
