Prof. Martti Mäntylä

Since 1999 Prof. Martti Mäntylä has been a research director of the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology to the Helsinki University of Technology and University of Helsinki. Prior to that, he was vice-dean of the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering, Helsinki University of Technology, and director of the Helsinki Graduate School of Computer Science and Engineering.

The present research interests of Prof. Mäntylä cover a range of topics relevant for future-generation communication and computing. His main focus is on user-centered methods for new digital service design, but also includes various aspects of mobile digital economy. The work in these areas presently takes place within two research groups at the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT): Ubiquitous Interaction and Networking Research.

Prof. Mäntylä has been with Helsinki University of Technology since 1980, working consecutively as a research scientist, senior research associate, and professor for Information Technology at the Laboratory of Information Processing Science at the university campus in Espoo, Finland. He started his career as a programmer and systems’ analyst with the Central Statistical Office of Finland in 1975.

Prof. Mäntylä was a visiting scholar at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics, Darmstadt, Germany in 1996, at the IBM Research Division, Thomas J. Watson Research Center in the United States in 1989, and at the Computer Systems Laboratory at Stanford University in 1983.

He is a member of the Finnish Academy of Technology, ACM, IEEE, and the Eurographics Association, as well as an editorial board member of the Journal of Computing and Information Science in Engineering (ASME & ACM). He is also a reviewer for project proposals for the Academy of Finland, the Research Council of Norway, the National Science Foundation (USA), the Israel Academy of Sciences, and the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences. He has received several research awards.

He holds an engineering degree in Computer Science and Operations Analysis and a doctor degree in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from Helsinki University of Technology.
