Prof. Paul Compton

Professor Paul Compton is head of the School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales, Sydney.

Prior to joining UNSW he spent 20 years in medical research at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney, where his group was responsible for GARVAN-ES1, one of the first medical expert systems to go into clinical use.

His research since has focussed largely on the problems of developing and maintaining knowledge-based systems in the face of constant evolution and change. Ripple-Down Rules, the main outcome of this research has had significant industrial impact, enabling very large knowledge bases to be built by domain experts, and is used, for example, to support Tesco.com’s web presence.
