Stan Smits

Stan Smits is Senior Vice President of Philips Healthcare and Chief Software Technology Officer. In this role he is functionally responsible for software research and development at Philips Healthcare. This responsibility includes architecture, technology choices, platforms, methodologies and tools of Philips Healthcare software activities.

Philips Healthcare is a division of Royal Philips Electronics with a revenue of around 6 B€ in 2006. Philips Healthcare is a leading provider of Diagnostic Imaging Equipment, Patient Monitoring Equipment, Home Healthcare and has a comprehensive Healthcare IT solutions portfolio.

Prior to his current role Smits was responsible for establishing the Philips Healthcare’s Informatics business. In this role he was responsible for the Stentor PACS acquisition in July 2005 and the Epic Enterprise IT alliance in November 2003. Smits transferred to Philips Healthcare in 2000 from Philips Business Communications.

Smits graduated in 1974 with a M. Sc. in physics from Leiden University and was until 1978 research scientist at the FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics in Amsterdam. From 1978 to 1994 he held various R&D and General Management positions in the domains of data- and tele-communications with Digital Equipment Corporation and was based in France for 10 years.
